Israel says it uncovered 800 shafts to Hamas tunnels below Gaza.
Since the beginning of a ground campaign in Gaza on October 27, Israeli troops have discovered and destroyed more than half of the 800 holes that led to Hamas’ enormous underground network of tunnels and bunkers, according to a statement released by the Israeli military on Sunday.
Before the conflict in the Gaza Strip, which has been going on for eight weeks, the Palestinian Islamist organization announced that it has hundreds of kilometers of tunnels, which is a network that is similar in size to the New York subway system, to secure and act as operating bases.
They have become excellent targets for Israeli air attacks with piercing bombs, and army engineers are utilizing mapping robots and explosive gel that can be poured into the tunnels. This has made them prime targets for Israeli army engineers.
“The tunnel shafts were located in civilian areas, many of which were near or inside civilian buildings and structures, such as schools, kindergartens, mosques, and playgrounds,” the military stated in a statement released on Sunday.
The announcement, which provided a summary of anti-tunnel operations that had been carried out up to this point, came after forces reported to the media almost daily that they had discovered access shafts in civilian places.
The war’s impact on civilians has caused international powers to become more concerned. Washington sent a warning to Israel on Saturday to exercise caution.
“Detonation and sealing off” were two of the operational tactics utilized to destroy 500 of the approximately 800 shafts uncovered, according to the military. In addition to that, it was stated that “many miles” of the primary tunnel lines had been damaged.
