Why has Dominic Raab resigned as British deputy prime minister?
After an independent investigation, British Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab resigned on Friday.
WHAT WAS RAAB’S RESIGNATION LETTER?
Raab wrote to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that the inquiry had dismissed all but two of his accusations and created a hazardous precedent for government ministers.
Raab said the report found he had never “sworn or shouted at anyone, let alone thrown anything or otherwise physically intimidated anyone, nor intentionally sought to belittle anyone”.
He apologized: “I am genuinely sorry for any unintended stress or offence that any officials felt, as a result of the pace, standards and challenge that I brought to the Ministry of Justice.”
Dangerous precedent
“In setting the threshold for bullying so low, this inquiry has set a dangerous precedent,” Raab added.
“It will encourage spurious complaints against ministers, and have a chilling effect on those driving change on behalf of your government – and ultimately the British people.”
He also highlighted “a number of improprieties that came to light during the course of this inquiry” with Sunak and requested a separate review.
Raab called those misdeeds “the systematic leaking of skewed and fabricated claims to the media in breach of the rules of the inquiry and the Civil Service Code of Conduct… I hope these will be independently reviewed”.
Former British foreign minister Raab pledged to help Sunak and the government.
The inquiry began when?
Raab sought the investigation in November after two formal complaints about his behavior. Five formal complaints were added a month later.
He stated he has received complaints from his term as foreign and justice minister.
Raab claimed he acted professionally throughout. Sunak originally denied that Raab had bullied personnel.
