Venomous Creatures Suddenly Wash Up on Jersey Beach

Jersey Beach was in for an odd situation when the currents from the Gulf Stream brought in a few strange creatures. The sea washed up several jelly-fish like creatures that were venomous and oddly shaped indeed.

The creatures looked like something out of a science fiction film about aliens. The creature that is called the Portuguese Man O’ War resembles a jelly-fish and is about a foot long with extremely long tentacles.

A marine science professor at the Stockholm University, Matthew Landau said, “Typically in the Northeast, we see these animals periodically in the summer, when they are successfully carried north by the Gulf Stream current. Sometimes the currents move these animals into temperate seas when the winds drive them toward coastlines.”

When the venomous creature showed up at the Harvey Cedars, the lifeguard had to post a warning on the Facebook page to inform the unwary visitors.

About the nature of the stings, Landau said, “Symptoms are usually localized (pain where contact was made), but in some cases there can be muscle and joint aches, or even confusion and respiratory distress. In extreme cases, a victim may go into shock, which in deep water will lead to drowning.”
