Ukraine’s ex-president says he was blocked from leaving the country.

In what he described as a politically motivated attempt to interrupt his job, the former President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, stated that he was prevented from leaving the country on Friday morning.

Poroshenko, who served as the leader of Ukraine from 2014 to 2019 and is now a politician in the opposition, uploaded a video of himself at a border crossing with Poland. In the video, he claimed he was denied entry and held up documents demonstrating that he had legal authorization to cross the border.

Martial law requires Ukrainian officials to obtain special permission before traveling outside the country. After some time had passed, Oleksandr Korniyenko, the deputy speaker of the Ukrainian parliament, revealed that he had revoked Poroshenko’s authorization to leave the country.

Even though parliamentarians were permitted to travel for party political activities, Korniyenko stated that he had received a letter, which he could not comment on, which prompted him to revoke the authorization for Poroshenko’s trip.

In contrast to the near-total unity at the beginning of the battle, the debate arises amid gradually increasing tensions between the government and the opposition. These tensions are mostly about internal issues such as budgets and appointments, and they are occurring as the struggle against invading Russian forces continues to grind on.

Poroshenko stated that he intended to fly to Poland to negotiate an end to a truckers’ blockade. Then, he intended to travel to the United States to boost support for Ukraine’s military endeavor.

In addition to the video that he uploaded, he also included a note in which he accused the government of President Volodymyr Zelenskiy of canceling the authorization and engaging in political maneuvering in advance of the elections.

“This is an anti-Ukrainian diversion,” said Poroshenko in his paper. “It is not just the hampering of my entire team’s diplomatic work, but unfortunately a blow to Ukraine’s defence capabilities.”

No immediate response was received from the office of Zelenskiy in response to a request for comment.

Poroshenko, the leader of the opposition party, European Solidarity, is a strong opponent of the administration that Zelenskiy has in government.

As a result of Zelenskiy’s overwhelming victory against Poroshenko in the 2019 presidential election, the two men engaged in a contentious and frequently very personal struggle.

The previous month, Zelenskiy told the Ukrainian people it was “not the time” to have a presidential election. Under regular conditions, the election would be planned for March 2024; however, martial law prohibits holding elections during this period.
