Moscow’s forces intensified their air bombardments and tried to move ahead with ground forces as fighting raged around the destroyed eastern Ukrainian town of Avdiivka, the Ukrainian military reported on Monday. Moscow’s forces also attempted to advance with land forces.

According to the officials, the Russian soldiers that were stationed around the city had sustained severe casualties. They also stated that Ukrainian forces had successfully withstood Russian advances in other regions along the front line, which stretches about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles).

As Ukraine was engaged in a counteroffensive, gaining only incremental advances in the east and south, the commander in chief of the Ukrainian armed forces talked with the newly appointed Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States.

After failing to move on Kyiv in the early days of the 20-month-old war, Russia has shifted its attention to eastern Ukraine. Russia launched an offensive to take Avdiivka, which is 20 kilometers (12 miles) away from the Russian-occupied city of Donetsk, in the middle of October.

“There is still active fighting going on. “The occupiers have increased the number of airstrikes over the past two days using guided bombs from Su-35 aircraft,” the spokesperson for the Ukrainian military, Oleksandr Shtupun, said on national television.

“In addition, the adversary is advancing with increasing men. However, when they attempted to deploy armored vehicles the day before yesterday, a fire destroyed two tanks and fourteen other vehicles.

According to him, Ukrainian soldiers had successfully withstood eight strikes in the previous twenty-four hours in the city, which is famous for its enormous coking factory.

The chief of the military administration in Avdiivka, Vitaliy Barabash, informed the official news outlet Ukrinform that Russian losses in the ongoing advance on the city were at a minimum of 3,000–4,000 dead and an additional 7,000–8,000 injured. Russian forces were the ones who provided this information.

He stated that “not a single building” remained intact in the city, which currently has a population of just over 1,500 out of its pre-war peak of 32,000 and is in the process of being evacuated. Even though there was regular bombardment, the hospital continued to operate, and one store remained open.

“Quite simply, Avdiivka and its strategic position is geographically located on heights and you can see Donetsk…from here,” according to Barabash. “And that’s what they need it.”

In its evening report, the Ukraine’s General Staff stated that its troops had rejected 15 Russian strikes near the long-contested town of Maryinka, which is located east of Avdiivka. Additionally, the report said that its forces had repelled 11 Russian attacks near Bakhmut, situated to the northeast, and six Russian raids near Kupiansk, located in Ukraine’s northeast.

According to reports originating from Russia, Moscow’s forces were victorious in thwarting five Ukrainian efforts to advance on settlements located outside of Bakhmut, a town that Russian forces took control of in May following months of combat.

General Valery Zaluzhnyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, stated that he had a conversation with Charles Brown, the Chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff, about the “hottest sectors” of the front line.

This month, Zaluzhnyi stated that the battle was entering a period of attrition, which prompted President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to refute any notion that the fight was about to reach a standstill.
