Uganda opposition party says its leader held at the airport.
A top official from Uganda’s most prominent opposition party said that the party’s leader, Bobi Wine, was detained on Thursday at Entebbe International Airport upon his return from traveling overseas.
In recent years, Robert Kyagulanyi, better known by his stage name of Bobi Wine, has established himself as the most formidable opponent to President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power in the East African nation since 1986. President Museveni is 79 years old.
“The weak administration has taken our president into custody just after he arrived at Entebbe International Airport. Mathias Mpuuga, the head of the National Unity Platform in the Ugandan parliament, claimed on his X account that “we set out to receive him today, but the panicky regime security could not even allow him into immigration.” We had planned to meet him today.
Requests for comments made to the police were not immediately met with a response.
In the most recent presidential election, which took place in 2021, Wine competed against Museveni and lost, even though he rejected the results and claimed extensive cheating and intimidation by security personnel.
