U.S. Senator Blumenthal fractures leg, to undergo ‘routine’ surgery

Democratic U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal suffered a broken leg in an accident during a University of Connecticut procession on Saturday. He announced this on Twitter and will have surgery this weekend.

The U.S. Senate is out of session until April 17. The 77-year-old senator from Connecticut shouldn’t miss any votes if the procedure goes according to schedule.

As a fellow parade goer stumbled and fell on him, Blumenthal confirmed on Twitter that he had fractured his femur. “Tomorrow is a routine procedure to make sure everything recovers correctly. I anticipate complete recuperation!”

Even one or two absences might have an influence on whether legislation can pass since Democrats have a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate.

After 20 years as Connecticut’s attorney general, Blumenthal was chosen to serve in the U.S. Senate in 2011.
