Trump recorded pressuring Michigan officials to toss Biden’s 2020 win.
In a pressure campaign reminiscent of his strategies in Georgia, Donald Trump personally called two election officials in Michigan. He asked them not to recognize Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the state during the 2020 presidential election. The Detroit News said that Trump’s actions were similar to those in Georgia.
During a phone call that took place on November 17, 2020, the then-president advised two other Republicans who were serving on the Wayne County Board of Canvassers not to sign the certification for the state election. According to call recordings examined by the Michigan news outlet, he said they would look “terrible” and that they should “fight for our country.”
Detroit, a Democratic city with a considerable black majority population, is located inside Wayne County, the most populous county in the state of Michigan, in the Midwest. In the recording, Trump is heard saying that Republicans were “cheated on this election” and that “everybody knows Detroit is crooked as hell,” as stated in the story that was released on Thursday.
Trump, who is currently the frontrunner for the Republican candidacy for president in 2024, is currently facing federal and state criminal charges over claims that he planned to reverse the results of the presidential election in 2020, which resulted in a violent attack on Congress. The news of the tape came shortly after the allegations were made.
Trump has denied any involvement and has criticized the allegations as a political witch hunt that is intended to undermine his campaign. At the same time, he has continued to disseminate erroneous claims that major vote fraud occurred in 2020.
When asked about the Michigan report, Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, responded by saying, “Trump’s actions were taken in furtherance of his duty as President of the United States to faithfully take care of the laws and ensure election integrity, including investigating the rigged and stolen 2020 Presidential Election.”
In Georgia, Trump faces accusations about his efforts to overturn his loss to Biden. These efforts include making a personal phone call to the Republican secretary of state in Georgia to “find” enough votes to change his defeat. However, the official refused to reverse his defeat in Georgia.
The authorities in the state of Michigan have brought criminal charges against sixteen Republican citizens of the state for their alleged participation in a conspiracy to create fraudulent electors following the presidential election occurring in 2020. It has not been charged against Trump.
“My office will continue to support the efforts of state and federal law enforcement to investigate and hold those involved accountable for every crime committed in the attempt to overturn the will of Michigan voters,” said Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in a statement. Benson added that she had been unaware of the recordings until Thursday’s report. Benson’s statement was released after the report surfaced.
Benson continued, “We must recognize the direct line between these recordings and the tragedy that occurred at our U.S. Capitol on January 6, alluding to the attack that supporters of Trump made while Congress was meeting to confirm Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
A request for response was made to a spokesperson for the Attorney General of Michigan, Dana Nessel, a Democrat. However, the official did not immediately answer.
In addition, representatives for Ronna McDaniel, the chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, who was reportedly present on the call in Michigan, did not reply to a request for comment.
McDaniel, who spoke with the Detroit News, remained steadfast in her plea to the county board, which stated “that there was ample evidence that warranted an audit.” The article also stated that both McDaniel and Trump offered to provide legal representation for the board members.
