Trump Declares the Death of DACA

Trump declared that DACA is dead on Easter. What happens now?

On Monday, Trump has announced the official death of DACA, a plan that has protected young immigrants from being deported from the United States put in place during the Obama administration, and called for Mexico’s enforcement of its border security to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the United States.

In a tweet he wrote on Monday morning, Mr. Trump commented that “Mexico has the absolute power not to let these large “Caravans” of people enter their country. They must stop them at their Northern Border, which they can do because their border laws work, not allow them to pass through into our country, which has no effective border laws.”

The “caravans” mentioned by Mr. Trump are in fact groups of Central Americans who have been traveling through Mexico to enter America in hope for asylum. Mr. Trump has placed the blames for illegal immigrants on Democrats and the Mexican government, in response to criticism of conservative commentator Ann Coulter and others on his lack of fulfillment of campaign promises.

Mr. Trump proceeded on tweeting that Mexico is “making a fortune of NAFTA… They have very strong border laws – ours are pathetic.” Mexico’s foreign secretary, Luis Videgaray Caso, has expressed willingness to cooperate with the United States in its efforts against illegal immigrants.

DACA has been the central target of President Trump during his campaign and since his inauguration. He ended the program last year, an attempt that was stalled by courts. This was responded by Mr. Trump with no new deal with the Democrats in place of DACA to protect young immigrants.

Despite the statement that DACA is dead as of Monday, the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, stated that the president has indeed made offers on immigration policy as he had promised. She confirmed that “he wanted to see something get done, and Democrats refused to actually put something on the table or work with the president to get anything done.” She reciprocated Mr. Trump’s criticism against the Democrats for stalling border security efforts and accused them as wanting to “use DACA recipients as political pawns.”

Mr. Trump also commented in his tweets that “Congress must immediately pass Border Legislation, use Nuclear Option if necessary, to stop the massive inflow of Drugs and People. Border Patrol Agents (and ICE) are GREAT, but the weak Dem laws don’t allow them to do their job.”

He also attributed DACA’s demise to Democrats’ lack of actions and initiatives. He said that since the Democrats want no borders or walls, they would have to deal with the drugs and crime. He called on Congress, both the Republican-controlled House and Senate, to act quickly upon their return next week.

Republican of Colorado, Representative Mike Coffman, commented that the president’s statement and tweets on DACA “couldn’t have come at a worst time.” He emphasized how Easter is a time to rejoice and unite with families, instead of one to “put more anxiety on young people.” He last called “for Members on both sides of the aisle to join forces and find a permanent solution for DACA recipients.”
