“This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!” Tweets Trump as the investigation into Russian Connections Gets Underway

As President Trump held a press conference this morning with Colombian President Juan Martin Santos, he was ready to discuss not only relations with Colombia but also those with Russia. As he has stated since January, he defiantly stood his ground, claiming that even though he respects the actions being taken, this is a “witch hunt” and will not yield any results. In fact, he went as far as to say that this special counsel is dividing the country. Today saying that he thought the firing of Comey would have been welcomed by those in the government since members of both parties were complaining of his actions.

Throughout the day, Trump cited many reasons that this investigation is a witch hunt. To begin with, this is a distraction from what Trump has achieved. The border has become a much stricter place and has prevented many from entering the country. His administration has also created many jobs, as well as what Mattis has achieved in the short time that he has been at the helm during the war on terror.

What possibly has President Trump most frustrated, though, is why he is receiving counsel when both Clinton and Obama committed illegal acts and had them overlooked. Trump tweeted this morning, “With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special counsel appointed!” in reference more specifically to Clinton with both the Benghazi scandal as well as the private email server.

In the press conference today, not only did he speak out about the investigation, but he also distanced himself from Michael T. Flynn, a former national security advisor who inadvertently started this supposed ‘witch hunt.’

Trump has stood his ground since the news originally broke, saying that he is able to speak for himself and his campaign regarding allegations which say he was in touch with the Russians. Today though, this argument faced a major blow when the story that he told reporters this afternoon did not match those that Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein gave this morning to the Senate. Where Trump stated he fired Director Comey after speaking with the Deputy Attorney General, the Senators at the meeting told reporters that Rosenstein said he was certain Comey would be fired before writing a memo that was critical of his performance as director. These both contradict the original story Trump stood by, which said his firing was a result of his frustrations with the way FBI handled the Russia investigation.

Today though, the investigation carries on, regardless of whether Trump agrees with it or not. After Rosenstein’s meeting with the Senate this morning, the investigation has moved off Capitol Hill and into the hands of the capable and trusted Mr. Mueller. The Trump Administration will have to quickly handle this shift, as President Trump is currently leaving for his first trip abroad of his presidency. One recommendation from those close to Trump was to hire a private lawyer to handle the investigation.
