Texas Democratic Rep. Colin Allred announced Wednesday he will oppose Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in 2024.

Three-term congressman and NFL player Allred is an underdog. During a strong midterm election cycle for Democrats, Cruz narrowly defeated Beto O’Rourke in 2018.

“Some say a Democrat can’t win in Texas,” Allred stated in a campaign kickoff video. “I never should have gotten this far.”

In 2024, Democrats must defend 23 Senate seats to Republicans’ 10. Three Democratic seats are in states Republican President Donald Trump won in 2020.

After O’Rourke lost by double-digits in a costly attempt to oust Republican Gov. Greg Abbott last year, Democrats are trying to rebuild in the nation’s most red state.

Allred, a Tennessee Titans linebacker, will leave a safe Democratic congressional seat in Dallas to run for Senate. House Foreign Affairs committee member.
