The first major party candidate to announce their run for the presidency of The United States is now official.

This Monday, March 23, Texas Senator Ted Cruz will be announcing his candidacy for the presidency of The United States. Cruz’s announcement is unique for several reasons. One reason it the fact that Cruz is announcing his candidacy without forming an exploratory committee, which is almost never done. Also Cruz was born in Canada, which will raise legal questions.

Ted Cruz, who was overwhelmingly elected to the United States Senate from Texas in 2012 with 57% of the vote, has made waves since taking office. Cruz has been a constant critic of The Obama Administration and Hillary Clinton. One of Cruz’s fiercest attacks on President Obama was during a CPAC speech when Cruz said that The Obama Administration was “the most lawless… in history.” Cruz has also criticized Hillary Clinton for her handling of Benghazi.

On paper Ted Cruz has solid conservative credentials to win a Republican Primary. He has an A rating from The National Rifle Association. Cruz is solidly pro life and pro drilling and is extremely hawkish on foreign policy. However, he did oppose President Obama’s plan to arm the Syrian rebels in their fight against Assad. Cruz has been extremely in favor of military action against ISIS.

Cruz has Cuban ancestry, although he was born in Canada. In a move last year that some saw as a cheap political stunt, Cruz revoked his own Canadian citizenship. He has been opposed to Canadian style single payer health care in the U.S. and strongly opposed to Obama Care. Cruz announcement will come from Virginia, where he is going to focus a lot of his speech on foreign policy.

Cruz has hinted openly for months about his intentions to seek the GOP nomination, and his plan to jump into the race formally was confirmed by a strategist for the first-term Republican senator. His entry makes it interesting to see who else is going to start announcing in the coming weeks.
