Southern Poverty Law Center decided it was the right move to apologize to Ben Carson after the organization placed the politician on their “Extremist Watch List;” a list that contains a vast amount of hate groups and white supremacists.

Carson, who is a potential frontrunner for the Republican candidacy in the upcoming presidential election in 2016, was placed on the “Extremist Watch List” after the civil rights advocacy group believed that the politician was anti-gay.

While the group received a lot of skepticism and criticism for placing Carson on the list, they released a statement on their website stating, “In October 2014, we posted an ‘Extremist File’ of Dr. Ben Carson. This week, as we’ve come under intense criticism for doing so, we’ve reviewed our profile and have concluded that it did not meet our standards, so we have taken it down and apologize to Dr. Carson for having posted it.”

In an interview between Carson and Fox News sparked the controversial move; where the Republican politician stated, “Marriage is between a man and a woman. It’s a well-established pillar of society and no group, be they gays, be they NAMBLA [North American Man/Boy Love Association], be they people who believe in bestiality — it doesn’t matter what they are, they don’t get to change the definition.”

While it’s true that the SPLC apologized for their actions they still believe that Carson is still guilty for making his own controversial statements and that he “made a number of statements that express views that we believe most people would conclude are extreme. We believe that his views should be closely examined.”
