On Tuesday, a Putin ally predicted a new world war and increased nuclear tensions.

“The world is sick and quite probably is on the verge of a new world war,” said Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Putin’s powerful security council, during a Moscow conference.

He claimed a new world war was unlikely, but nuclear conflict was a greater threat than climate change.

Putin claims this is the most perilous decade since World War Two. He views the Ukraine conflict as an existential struggle with an aggressive and arrogant West and has pledged to defend Russia with all means.

The US and its allies have called Russia’s invasion of Ukraine an imperial land grab. Ukraine claims Russian threats of nuclear war are meant to scare the West into cutting military aid.
