King Charles III has sworn to rule the UK with “justice and mercy” and to promote religious freedom.

The oath is the second of five parts of the 1,000-year-old coronation process.

Charles swore on the Bible that he would accept the oath. He kissed the sacred book.

The service today reflects the UK’s religious diversity.

The coronation includes Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, and Sikh religious leaders for the first time. Charles pledged to be “the defender of faiths,” not “the faith.”
