College professors at the University of California are joining students who believe that the American flag should be removed from their campus.

The professors are declaring that the flag could represent racism and other negative connotations for those who perceive it differently than just a sign of patriotism.

According to FoxNews.com, a letter issued by the professors joining the cause they state, U.S. nationalism often contributes to racism and xenophobia, and that the paraphernalia of nationalism is in fact often used to intimidate.”

The letter has gained a lot of attention after the petition started to receive a lot of signatures throughout the nation, and many people have become quite upset with the vote to remove the flag from school because it could be the start of other organizations and schools removing their American flags from their grounds.

The letter continued to state, “We admire the courage of the resolution’s supporters amid this environment of political immaturity and threat, and support them unequivocally,” but people who oppose the professors and students letters and petitions state that this is an Un-American act, and lawmakers have decided to start working on a new legislation that would prohibit the banning of the flag from being displayed.

Chancellor Howard Gillman posted on the Universities website that, “Regardless of your opinion on the display of the American flag, we must be united in protecting the people who make this university a premier institution of higher learning,” and student government President, Reza Zomorrodian, also commented by saying, “Our Campus is patriotic and proud. We did something right for our campus;” despite what many believe is true.

Legislatives were planned to meet on March 10th to discuss the situation, but the meeting has been pushed back because of concerns and threats of violence were issued against the University of California.
