Kushner Under Investigation: House Representative Jason Chaffetz Requests Documents

This past Thursday, Representative Jason Chaffetz, Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, asked the current FBI director, Andrew McCabe, to turn over several more documents regarding former FBI director James B. Comey. The documents deal with Comey’s previous interactions with the White House, as well as the Justice Department, and consist of materials dating back four years into the Obama administration in 2013, when Comey was first sworn in as FBI director.

Chaffetz has written a letter to McCabe in which he addresses that he would like to review Comey’s memos and other materials so he can better understand the former FBI director’s communications with the White House and the attorney general’s office.

Recently, the Washington Post reported that meetings held in December 2016 between Jared Kushner (Trump’s son-in-law) and Russian officials are under investigation by the FBI.

The Washington Post first reported last week that one of Trump’s senior advisors was a “person of interest”, a term that has no legal meaning. However, we now can identify that “person of interest” as Jared Kushner, 36-year-old real estate investor and developer, newspaper owner, and husband to Trump’s daughter Ivanka. Kushner recently resigned as CEO of Kushner Companies, as well as the publisher of the Observer, to help develop Trump’s digital media strategies.

Currently, the FBI, the Oversight Committee (which monitors and supervises the activities of federal agencies)- as well as many other congressional panels- are investigating Russian meddling in the most recent presidential election. Their primary focus is on any potential connections between Russia and the Trump campaign. On May 9th, Trump removed Comey from his position, as questions began to surface about the investigation. The investigation, however, is now being led by former FBI director, Robert Mueller III.

We now know that Kushner, a key white house advisor and member of Trump’s innermost circle, attended meetings late last year with Sergey Kislyak, Russian ambassador to the U.S., and Sergey Gorkov, a well-known Russian banker.

Jamie Gorelick, Kushner’s attorney, has stated that the senior advisor “previously volunteered to share with Congress what he knows about these meetings” and that, “he will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry”.
