Islamic State Claims Responsibility for Manchester Attack

It is what seems like a normal Monday in Manchester, England, when many teens, children and parents enjoy a night out at an Ariana Grande concert.  All seems to be going well—high-spirits, great music, and overall joyous feelings when the concert comes to an end with an explosion.  All around, audience members scream and run in terror as the blast kills at least 22 people, injuring an additional 59.  People flood out of the arena venue and authorities rush towards the scene to help those in need.

For some, this was the first ever concert experience that they ever had—regardless, it was intended to be an enjoyable time for all.  This was not the case, however, after the events of the night.  On Tuesday, May 23, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for this incident, explaining that one of its “soldiers” executed the suicidal blast within the pop concert.  Known for its violence and pompous rhetoric, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (better known as ISIS) has become a household name due to its notorious acts of brutality.

According to The Washington Post, the claim “came as British investigators appeared to narrow their probe on one suspected assailant—whose name was not made public—and police teams fanned out around the northern city after the worst terrorist strike in Britain in more than a decade.”  It is thus clear that the Islamic State is targeting areas of large populations to execute attacks—such after the Paris attacks in 2015.

British Prime Minister Theresa May dubbed this incident as a “callous terrorist attack.”  Allied sovereign nations condemned the actions of the Islamic State as she added, “This attack stands out for its appalling, sickening cowardice deliberately targeting innocent defenseless children and young people who should have been enjoying one of the most memorable nights of their lives.”  Among the casualties, a dozen of those injured were under 16 years old—some casualties also carried through were “as young as elementary school students”.

Though further investigation is still occurring regarding the events of Monday night, Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins says, “We believe at this stage the attack last night was conducted by one man.  We believe the attacker was carrying an improvised explosive device, which he detonated, causing this atrocity.”  President Trump vowed “absolute solidarity” with Britain and deemed the attackers “evil losers in life.”

Showing much sorrow and anguish for the occurrences of the night, Ariana Grande tweeted, “broken. From the bottom of my heart, i am so so sorry. i don’t have words.”  As authorities continue to work to uncover this case, many in the world have thus been influenced by this episode.  It is very important for all, whenever in a crowded area, that all happenings and surroundings be observed carefully in order to ensure overall safety and well-being.
