On Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian stated that members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) should implement an oil embargo, additional measures, and the expulsion of all Israeli diplomats.

After a bombing at a Gaza hospital late on Tuesday killed several Palestinians, the OIC is holding an urgent conference in the Saudi city of Jeddah to tackle the worsening Israeli-Palestinian crisis.

“The foreign minister calls for an immediate and complete embargo on Israel by Islamic countries, including oil sanctions, in addition to expelling Israeli ambassadors if relations with the Zionist regime have been established,” according to a statement released by the Iranian foreign ministry.

Amirabdollahian also demanded the creation of a group of Muslim attorneys to investigate any possible war crimes Israel may have perpetrated in Gaza.

Israel and Iran do not exchange diplomatic relations.

Before the bombing at the Gaza hospital on Tuesday, health officials in Gaza estimated that at least 3,000 people had perished during Israel’s 11-day bombardment, which started after a Hamas attack on southern Israeli communities on October 7 that resulted in 1,300 deaths and 200 hostages being taken into Gaza.

The request by Iran for Islamic nations to impose sanctions on Israel in 2023 represents a significant shift in the dynamic geopolitical environment of the Middle East. The effects of this action are extensive, impacting global relations, Middle Eastern alliance dynamics, and regional stability. The globe is closely observing the situation as it develops, aware of the possible consequences of this geopolitical move.
