For athletes all around the world, scaling Mount Everest is a dream that only a few can attain. Combined with the physical and mental strength required to achieve such a feat, much discipline is also required by the athlete due to oxygen depletion at high altitudes.

Few can say that they have scaled the harrowing mountain range, and even less can say that they raced against time to do so.  Anshu Jamsenpa can say just that. Jamsenpa, a 38-year-old mother of two from India, scaled Mount Everest twice in less than a week.

It is reported that, “She summited Everest twice in five days, making her the women’s record holder for fastest double ascent of Earth’s highest peak.  She beat a record set by a Nepali woman, Chhurim Sherpa, who made two ascents in seven days in 2011.”

Jamsenpa comes from the mountainous northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh—such can explain her tolerance for low-oxygen levels and high altitudes.  Scaling the southeast ridge route of Everest on Tuesday, May 16, Jamsenpa repeated the journey once again on Sunday, May 21.

These two ascents were not the first for Jamsenpa; she reached the summits twice before during her 10-day journey in 2011 and again in 2013.

As a mountaineering trainer, her drive and confidence helped propel her past the many pains and fatigues of the journey.  She says, “I got blisters on my legs.  I was tired, but then still I thought, ‘No, I must try.  I must push.’  I had that confidence in me.  If you try, you can definitely get success.”  Looking back on everything, she believes that the ability to achieve success starts with the ability to believe in yourself.

Carrying this positive attitude, she concludes, “The only thing is that you have to be ready to face all the pains and all the obstacles.  That was there in my mind, and that’s how I like it.”
