After employers rejected its pay proposals, a group representing over 200,000 railway workers warned Friday it would strike next week.

The EVG union announced a 50-hour strike from late Sunday to late Tuesday. Deutsche Bahn has canceled all long-distance travel and most regional trains.

After an April walkout, the strike may be one of the largest in recent years.

However, union co-leader Cosima Ingenschay suggested employers could make a last-minute offer to avoid a strike.

EVG demanded a 12% salary increase for its members, or 650 euros per month. It also wants basic pay rather than bonuses to guarantee the minimum wage of 12 euros an hour for 2,700 workers.

The strike will impact freight and dozens of rail firms.
