Factbox: Countries rush to evacuate foreign citizens from Sudan

Foreign embassies and people are being evacuated due to Sudan’s army’s clash with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Some countries have evacuated nationals via Port Sudan on the Red Sea, 800 kilometres (500 miles) from Khartoum.

Some nations’ progress:

GERMANY
Belgian, British, Dutch, Jordanian, and U.S. citizens, as well as Germans, were evacuated by a German mission on Tuesday morning.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said steps were underway to expel the remaining Germans, but did not specify how many.

FRANCE
President Emmanuel Macron informed his administration that France has evacuated over 500 persons from Sudan, including 200 French citizens, Americans, Britons, and others. He added a French commando wounded in crossfire during the evacuation was stable.

Two diplomatic sources said Paris sent a warship to Port Sudan to rescue evacuees.

ITALY Military planes from Djibouti rescued 83 Italians and 13 others, including children and the Italian ambassador, overnight.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani claimed 19 Italian NGO employees and missionaries were transferred to Egypt two days ago, while some stayed in Sudan.

BRITAIN
Britain began a “large-scale” evacuation on Tuesday, prioritizing families with children, the elderly, and the infirm. Foreign minister James Cleverly said Britain was cooperating with its allies.

The government estimates 4,000 Britons in Sudan. Saturday saw its diplomats and families evacuated.

NETHERLANDS
Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra said 100 Dutch nationals have been evacuated from Sudan since Sunday.

Half left on four Dutch evacuation aircraft to Jordan with 70 individuals from 14 nations.

Two Dutch military planes are available to rescue 150 Dutch nationals and other countries.

US forces evacuated American and some foreign officials Saturday.

On Monday, Washington claimed several dozen Americans were traveling overland in a U.N.-led convoy to Port Sudan, and dozens more had indicated interest in departing. It stated it was preparing naval assets for evacuations.

RUSSIA
Russia has not evacuated its embassy or citizens from Khartoum. “Cooperation and consultations are going on round-the-clock, and various possibilities are being examined,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said. “No decision yet.”

JAPAN
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said all Japanese who wanted to leave were evacuated.

He said 45 fled aboard a Japanese military airplane Monday night and eight with France and other organizations.

CYPRUS
Cyprus established a humanitarian rescue mechanism on Tuesday to allow third nations to evacuate Sudanese citizens.

CHINA
China’s foreign ministry claimed most Chinese nationals were safely evacuated in groups to neighboring countries.

UKRAINE
Ukraine saved 87 of its residents, mostly pilots, aviation technicians, and their families, among 138 civilians, including Georgian and Peruvian citizens.

South Africa
South Africa anticipated its remaining 12 nationals in Sudan to leave on Tuesday.
