Fact Checker Claims Obama Made False Claims About the Keystone XL Pipeline

The fact checker, Glenn Kessler, for The Washington Post proved that President Obama was wrong when he made the claim that the Keystone XL pipeline would “bypasses” the U.S and that it would only be carrying “Canadian Oil.”

President Obama originally stated these false claims during an interview last week on WDAY of Fargo, N.D.

In the interview Obama stated, “I’ve already said I’m happy to look at how we can increase pipeline production for U.S. oil, but Keystone is for Canadian oil to send that down to the Gulf. It bypasses the United States and is estimated to create a little over 250, maybe 300 permanent jobs. We should be focusing more broadly on American infrastructure for American jobs and American producers, and that’s something that we very much support.”

It appears that The President is not expressing how important this Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline is, as the President vetoed a bipartisan-backed bill that was supposed to start up the project. Kessler, stated that the crude oil could definitely be used by the United States despite what President Obama might imply.

Kessler states, “Current trends suggest that only about half of that refined product would be exported, and it could easily be lower.”

Kessler then gave him the worst rating he could in the publication where he went on to say, “If he disagrees with the State Department’s findings, he should begin to make the case why it is wrong, rather than assert the opposite, without any factual basis. Moreover, by telling North Dakota listeners that the pipeline has no benefit for Americans, he is again being misleading, given that producers in the region have signed contracts to transport some of their production through the pipeline.”
