Explosion Leaves Dozens Dead in Pakistan

It seems to unfortunately be a reality that every few days there is a headline like this. Today, Sunday, March 27th, a suicide attack in the Pakistan city of Lahore killed at least 69 people and left at least 300 injured.

The attack took place in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park, a large park in Lahore, and occurred mere feet away from swings occupied by families. After the attack, Jamaat-e-Ahrar, a split off group of the Pakistani Taliban, took responsibility for the carnage. Christians celebrating Easter were declared to be the targets of this attack.

The was the third blast this month in Pakistan, proving there is still major unrest in the area. The spokesman for Jamaat-e-Ahrar also said that this attack: “was also to give a message to government that it cannot deter us even in their stronghold, Lahore.” A shot straight at the authority in the region, showing they have no fear.

Security at Gulshan-e-Iqbal was reportedly extremely lax, with the guard at the gates not checking anyone entering the park. This unfortunately is likely not to be the last blast in Pakistan, all we can hope for is these attacks is to spurn those in power to take action against terrorism.
