Chipmaker Arm to make its own semiconductor – FT
Following its Initial Public Offering (IPO) later this year, British chipmaker Arm Ltd. is developing its own semiconductor to demonstrate the capabilities of its goods, according to a report in the Financial Times on Sunday.
According to persons briefed on the plan and reported by FT, Arm will collaborate with manufacturing partners to produce the new semiconductor. The business has also established a new “solutions engineering” team that will oversee the creation of these prototype chips for mobile devices, laptops, and other gadgets.
The newest chip being developed by the SoftBank Group Corp(9984.T)-backed startup, on which it only recently began to work, is “more advanced” than any other, according to the Financial Times, citing industry executives.
According to FT, the chip designer is merely working on a prototype and has no ambitions to market or license the product.
Arm has collaborations with significant chip contract manufacturers and is a significant intellectual property supplier to several chip firms, particularly in the mobile phone industry.
Intel Corp (INTC.O) announced earlier this month that it will collaborate with Arm to make sure that mobile phone processors and other devices that utilize Arm’s technology can be produced in Intel’s facilities.
A request for comment from Reuters was not immediately answered by Arm.
