China’s President Advises Trump Amid Flaring Tensions With North Korea

Washington and allied governments are in fear of North Korea’s increase in weapons development and potential ability to reach the continental U.S. with a ballistic missile.

Through a series of phone calls with China’s president, Xi Jinping, Trump addresses his concerns of dissuading North Korea from carrying out more nuclear and missile tests.

“Only if all sides live up to their responsibilities and come together from different directions can the nuclear issue on the peninsula be resolved as quickly as possible,” Jinping said in reference to the Korean Peninsula.

Jinping also encouraged Trump to resist spiteful responses toward North Korea’s threats.

China urges all parties to “avoid doing things that exacerbate tensions on the peninsula” for the sake of preventing military conflict.

“The two leaders reaffirmed the urgency of the threat posed by North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs, and committed to strengthen coordination in achieving the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” according to the White House briefing of Trump’s phone call with Jinping.

In order for new negotiations to be made, North Korea must demonstrate seriousness in the dismantling of its nuclear and missiles programs.

Trump additionally spoke with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan on Monday morning about the rising tensions.

“North Korea’s nuclear and missile program is an extremely serious threat to security not only in the international community, but also for our country,” Abe said. “We will continue to closely cooperate and maintain the high level of warning and surveillance. We will respond resolutely.”

During a White House meeting of Security Council envoys, Trump considers the dilemma to be “a real threat to the world.”

“North Korea is a big world problem, and it’s a problem we have to finally solve,” Trump said. “People have put blindfolds on for decades, and now it’s time to solve the problem.”
