Apple CEO meets India PM Modi, commits to growth and investment
In New Delhi on Wednesday, Apple Inc. (AAPL.O) CEO Tim Cook pledged development and investment in India to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Cook opened Apple’s first Indian retail store in Mumbai on Tuesday while in India. Apple’s New Delhi retail store opens Thursday.
“We share your vision of the positive impact technology can make on India’s future—from education and developers to manufacturing and the environment, we’re committed to growing and investing across the country,” Cook tweeted with a photo of him shaking hands with Modi.
Cook was a “absolute delight” to meet, the Indian PM tweeted.
“Glad to exchange views on diverse topics and highlight the tech-powered transformations taking place in India,” Modi remarked.
Apple has been increasing iPhone assembly via contract manufacturers and exports in India, despite having only a 3% market share. Cook’s visit highlights this.
