Angry Artist Composes Statue of Urinating Dog Next to “Fearless Girl”

Art, one of the many beauties in life, is a form of expression that one can use to convey feelings, whether it be about politics, love, or injustices within society. With civil rights issues still prevalent in the world, new art pieces are created every day to portray feelings about such topics.

City sculptor Alex Gardega, angry about the “Fearless Girl” statue composed across from the Wall Street’s “Charging Bull”, responded to the piece by creating a work of his own. Gardega thus created a sloppy statue of a dog urinating, placing it next to the girl as if it is aiming for the girl’s left leg. He titles this piece, the “Pissing Pug.”

Gardega says that the “Fearless Girl” is “corporate nonsense,” explaining that it was only a publicity stunt placed by a Boston-based financial firm.  He adds, “It has nothing to do with feminism, and it is disrespect to the artist that made the bull.  The bull had integrity.  I decided to build this dog and make it crappy to downgrade the statute, exactly how the girl is a downgrade on the bull.”

But many female observers are infuriated with the piece, opposing him. They say that the “Fearless Girl” represents women taking on Wall Street and the corporate world—that the playing field is now leveled.  Gardega’s “Pissing Pug” is quoted as “misogynistic” and disrespectful towards women, according to many.

One woman says, “That’s an a-hole move.  You call this art?” as she walked by, kicking the statue of the pooch. Gardega responded by insisting that he is “pro-feminism” and does not resent the respecting sculptor.

Others, after Gardega explained the significance behind his piece, appreciated the message behind his art as much as he embraces it. Tourist Pam Guadarrama says, “I respect his opinion… and that’s really cool.”

Di Modica, the man who sculpted the “Charging Bull”, was no fan of the “Fearless Girl”—while he expressed his thoughts on the statue of the girl, he refused to give his opinion on Gardega’s piece. Kristen Visbal, the creator of the “Fearless Girl”, has also not given her comments on the “Pissing Pug”.
