Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wants Clarence Thomas impeached

After a media revelation detailed decades of luxurious travel for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas paid by a Republican contributor, Democratic U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stated on Sunday that she wants Thomas impeached and his aides investigated.

In an interview with CNN, she said, “It is the House’s job to pursue that inquiry in the form of impeachment.” She did concede, though, that change was improbable, given that the Republican-controlled House would be reluctant to move against a conservative court.

Thomas’s contact with Republican fundraiser and real estate billionaire Harlan Crow began after he was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1991, according to Ocasio-analysis Cortez’s of their history.

On Thursday, ProPublica revealed that, despite federal law mandating the disclosure of most gifts, Thomas took pricey vacations from Crow over decades.

In a statement released on Friday, Thomas defended the travels, stating that he had been told he was not obligated to declare that kind of “personal hospitality,” and that he had always tried to abide by disclosure standards.

He said that he will henceforth abide by the Judiciary Conference’s new standards regarding the disclosure of his personal finances.
