Aide says Bolsonaro floated Brazil coup with military officers after the election -reports.
Newspaper O Globo and news website UOL reported on Thursday that Jair Bolsonaro’s close aide informed police that the former Brazilian president and senior military officials met last year to discuss a military intervention to overturn the election results after he lost.
This month, Mauro Cid, a former adviser to Bolsonaro, consented to assist the Federal Police, who are looking into the former president for alleged offenses ranging from theft to inciting riots in the capital city of Brasilia in January. During their investigation, police had kept Cid’s testimony private.
The allegations from Thursday, which did not specify their sources, said that Cid had informed police that Bolsonaro had spoken to military leaders regarding a draft proclamation to annul the election.
Requests for comment on the reports were not immediately answered by the attorneys for Cid and Bolsonaro. According to the Federal Police, they won’t comment on active investigations.
Earlier this month, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes approved the police and Cid’s cooperation agreement and ordered their release from custody. Cid had been detained since May when he was arrested as part of a probe into the possible falsification of Bolsonaro’s COVID-19 immunization cards.
On January 8, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed Brasilian government facilities as part of a movement to deny the election results. The federal electoral court of Brazil has already suspended his eligibility to run for office until 2030.
