Activist Ahed Tamimi among Palestinians freed by Israel in Gaza truce swap
According to Israeli and Palestinian sources, prominent Palestinian activist Ahed Tamimi was one of thirty inmates whom Israel released early on Thursday morning as part of a short Gaza truce between Israel and Hamas terrorists.
Tamimi, who has been revered as a hero in the occupied West Bank ever since she was a youngster, was taken into custody by Israeli forces earlier this month on the allegation that she attempted to incite violence. The accusation has been refuted by her mother, who stated that it was based on a fabricated post on a social networking site.
There was a list of Palestinians who were freed on Thursday morning that was posted on the website of the Israel Prison Service. Among those released was Tamimi. After being held in Damon Prison, which is located close to the city of Haifa in Israel, she was reportedly freed, according to a Palestinian official.
In 2017, Tamimi, now 22 years old, gained widespread attention after she slapped an Israeli soldier who was conducting a raid in her town of Nabi Saleh, which is located in the West Bank. For years, she and others have been protesting the Israeli government’s confiscation of land in the region.
Tamimi was sentenced to eight months in jail after pleading guilty to reduced charges that included assault. The charges included the fact that she had slapped the soldier.
Tamimi is one of the hundreds of people who have been imprisoned in the West Bank as a result of the conflict between Israel and Hamas terrorists who are running Gaza. The conflict has caused violence to break out in the area. Israel has stated that the arrests it is making in the West Bank are aimed in part at preventing assaults.
In exchange for Hamas’ release of some of the 240 hostages it abducted during its fatal attack on October 7 in southern Israel, Israel has released Palestinians from its jails as part of a cease-fire agreement that is scheduled to expire on Thursday.
