Action to Condemn Turkish Security Personnel Being Taken
On May 16th President Trump met with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan at the house of the Turkish ambassador. While the meeting was taking place inside, a peaceful protest began outside. Instead of it being handled calmly, the Turkish Security Personnel took violent action to handle the situation. When all was said and done, 11 people total had been injured, and two of the 11 were so severely injured that they had to be taken to a hospital
Since the attack, the relations between the two nations have been strained due to a conflict in details. The Turkish say that this protest was a product of the Kurdistan Workers Party, a militant group, whereas the police chief in Washington released a statement saying that it was a “brutal attack” on those who were peacefully protesting.
Immediately after the attack, the US State Department released a statement terming Turkey’s conduct “disturbing,” which then led the Turkish government to summon their ambassador to the US to further discuss the nature of the violent incident.
Recently though, many US lawmakers have called for more action to be taken. Those in charge of the House Foreign Affairs Committee as well as members of both the Republican and Democratic parties have called for condemning of the Turkish Security Personnel that were involved in the attack. By condemning those who took violent action against peaceful protestors, the US hopes to begin a process that will create measures to prevent an incident similar to this one from occurring again in the future.
