Local media reported 11 deaths and four hospitalizations from a gas spill Sunday in Punjab, northern India.

Police told Press Trust of India that the gas leak occurred in an industrial area of Ludhiana city, but the source is unknown.

India’s National Disaster Response Force evacuated residents.

Disaster response officials told PTI they were identifying the gas leak’s type.

The news agency reported that Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Surabhi Malik believed manholes distributed the gas.

We’ll sample manholes. She speculated that manhole chemicals reacted with methane.

Bhagwant Mann, the state’s chief minister, tweeted that a factory leaked. “All possible help is provided,” he wrote.
